Time to corrupt the youth...

It's Labor Day, and we're already done about all the work that we're going to do for the day--our morning run, which was about five miles around Lake Murray, located about 1.5 miles from our house. We're going to spent at least part of the rest of the day at the beach and then have some friends over to grill out tonight. Not a bad way to spend a day. Then tommorow, the labor of the fall semester begins. The incoming freshman moved in on Saturday, and have been having orientation since then. Tomorrow morning, I'm taking 15 of them to the San Diego Museum of Art as part of the 'Discover San Diego' aspect of orientation. On Wednesday, I meet with my 21 new preceptees--students that are in one of my sections of Intro to Philosophy and have me as their academic advisor until they declare a major (or until the end of their sophomore year, when the dean's office makes them declare a major!). My preceptorial assistant, Jamie, and I have planned a photo-scavenger hunt for this first meeting. Then I have a luncheon with the Honors Program, as my second section of Intro is an honors section. Lunch is followed by new student convocation, where I get to where my academic regalia, and then another reception with students and parents. Classes then begin first thing on Thursday morning--though since all 3 of my classes are MWF, I don't teach until Friday.

UPDATE: a few pictures of us at the beach below the fold.

The beach we went to was just a few hundred yards from the famous Hotel Del Coronado:
